Obituary

Roy Kenneth Peter Hanks, the second child of the late Roy C. Hanks and Dorothy Webb Hanks, was born August 8, 1951 and departed this life on December 19, 2022. Roy was a native of Anderson County (Pendleton), South Carolina and received his early education in the Anderson County District #4 public schools. He graduated from Riverside High School in 1969 before attending South Carolina State University (SCSU) and later transferring to Clemson University to study horticulture/landscaping and design. At an early age his interest in horticulture developed from being raised on his grandparents’ farm. His grandfather, the late Rev. Peter Webb, taught him everything he knew about farming and ultimately Roy along with his older sister managed and trained siblings and other family members to help with the 100+ acre farm. From milking the cows before school and late at night, driving the tractors and mules, planting, and gardening, all these undertakings created his passion and love for farming and developed his hard work ethic.

In the summer of 1970, Roy met his wife, Nina. The two dated for two years, and on December 26, 1973, they married. From this union one son, Dr. Roy Kyle Hanks and one daughter, Kendra R. Hanks were born. Roy led a very purposeful and zealous life. He loved working on cars, gardening and sharing his produce with family and the community, entertaining family and friends with backyard cookouts and fish fries, and spending quality time with grandson,Kameron.  He was known for his big heart, gentle spirit, and when he spoke, everyone listened. Roy was a well-loved and respected employee at Duke Energy at Oconee Nuclear Station, retiring after thirty-eight years of loyal service. Roy leaves behind to cherish fond memories of his wife, Nina O. Hanks; son: Dr. Roy Kyle Hanks of San Leandro, CA; daughter: Kendra R. Hanks of Seneca, SC; grandson: Kameron K. Hanks of Seneca, SC; sisters: Malinda (David) Sims, Barbara Cobb, Deborah Butler, and Deloris Cox of Pendleton, SC; Louise (Curtis) Hill of Anderson, SC, and Tracey (Darrell) McGill of Charlotte, NC; brothers: Patrick (Patricia) Hanks of North Augusta, SC and Steven Hanks of Duncan, SC: uncles: Larry (Irene) Webb of Pendleton, SC and Borris Hanks of Belton, SC; and seventeen nieces and twelve nephews. He also leaves to mourn a host of other relatives and friends. He was proceeded in the death by an infant brother Raleigh Hanks.
